EDITORIAL: Justice Court

Copyright © Las Vegas Review-Journal – October 15, 2008

Local justice courts, the first contact most potential defendants have with the system.

In addition to handling small claims cases and misdemeanors, justices of the peace -- who are paid $158,000 a year -- are responsible for conducting initial arraignments and preliminary hearings before felony cases move along to District Court.

In North Las Vegas, 35-year-old Jonathan MacArthur is competing against 33-year-old Chris Lee for the newly created Department 3 seat.

Mr. Lee is a deputy secretary of state who deals with white-collar crime. A Bishop Gorman High School graduate, he spent seven years as a prosecutor in Clark County, where he was the lead attorney on several jury trials. He vows to treat people with fairness yet be "firm in that fairness."

Both young men have bright futures. But Mr. Lee's temperament, judgment and experience with both civil and criminal matters tip the scales. We urge a vote for Chris Lee.

SUN EDITORIAL: Our recommendation for justice of the peace: Chris Lee

October 13, 2008

Justices of the peace in Nevada play a crucial role in the legal system. They conduct preliminary hearings in criminal cases, determining whether there is enough evidence to hold someone for trial, and handle a variety of criminal and civil cases.

Former prosecutor Chris Lee is running for North Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Department 3. A former prosecutor in the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, Lee is now the deputy secretary of state for Southern Nevada. He has strong experience as a trial attorney and knows how Justice Court should work. The Sun endorses Chris Lee.

EDITORIAL: Local judicial races

Las Vegas Review-Journal – October 27, 2006

A handful of local judicial contests are on the November ballot

In the race for North Las Vegas Justice of the peace in Department 2, Deputy District Attorney Chris Lee is challenging incumbent Natalie Tyrrell. Attorneys responding to the Review-Journal's annual judicial survey note Judge Tyrrell's weak understanding of the law and of evidentiary rules. Others complain she is "out of her depth as a judge." It's time to see if Chris Lee can do better in North Las Vegas.

“Her opponent is Christopher Lee, a deputy district attorney. He said, "As a prosecutor I have been able to help individuals, but as a judge I will be able to help a larger community, North Las Vegas. The majority of the work is dealing with criminal cases, and it takes someone who has been in the trenches ... to come to a fair decision."”
